69 John Cary 1806

John Cary’s Traveller’s Companion originally appeared in 1789 (55) but most of the maps, including Devon, were re-engraved twice: in 1806 and again in 1822 (92). Although this 1806 version of Devon looks very similar to the earlier engraving, mileages between Honiton and Collumpton are new, Oakhampton and other towns are not horizontal, and the road SW of Samford Spiney is moved north across the river. The 1822 edition is entirely new both in format and engraving. Cary’s Traveller’s Companion was exceedingly popular and when Cary published his Cary´s New Itinerary from 1798 many buyers had both books bound together.
