10. Thomas Jenner 1643

Thomas Jenner (fl.1618-73) a print seller, publisher, puritan and parliamentarian is best known for two cartographic works; the reissue of Mathew Simons’ A Direction for the English Traviller; and a map of England and Wales known as the Quartermaster’s Map. The first he issued in 1643, having reworked the plates used by Mathew Simons (9) in 1635-36, the maps being redrawn at twice the original scale with place names shown in full; John Norden’s distance table remains although the border and London mileage line were partly erased. The order in which the maps were revised makes it seem likely that these maps were issued to meet the demands of the armies in the Civil War. A Direction for the English Traviller is without text; loose maps of A Book of the Names can only be distinguished by the text listing the hundreds and parishes below the map and on the reverse. The printer of A Book of the Names of all Parishes was Mary Simons, husband of Mathew. The full work is available on-line at antiquemaps.com courtesy of Richard Nicholson of Chester.
